Alonso Stands Firm: No January Loan for Chelsea's Estêvão Willian
Xabi Alonso has made it clear: Estêvão Willian will not be heading out on loan in January. The Chelsea winger needs to adjust to the manager's playing style before he can earn a more regular spot in the squad.
The conversation around Estêvão has intensified recently, especially after he remained on the bench during Chelsea's penalty shootout loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup. The 19-year-old Brazilian, who quickly won over fans after his £51.4 million move from Palmeiras, has only started twice in 11 matches this season, sparking worries that he might seek a way out.
Despite these challenges, Alonso is adamant that Estêvão is still in his plans. "No discussions about that," he stated firmly. "Every player wants to be on the pitch, and I take responsibility for their minutes. But they all need to be ready to contribute when called upon. Este’s training and attitude have been commendable."
Estêvão's first season in England was promising, highlighted by a stunning solo goal against Barcelona. However, a hamstring injury sidelined him during the World Cup, and since his return, he’s struggled to find his footing. This season, he’s logged just 47 minutes in the Premier League.
On Thursday, Estêvão received an international call-up from Carlo Ancelotti, but Alonso stressed that he needs to understand the game better, especially in terms of tactics. "It’s about adapting to the competition, learning how to play both with and against the ball, and becoming more competitive," he explained. "I understand his situation and feelings, but it’s still early in his journey."
After the Liverpool match, Alonso hinted that physicality might have played a part in Estêvão's absence. He elaborated on the importance of decision-making with the ball as well. "It’s crucial to know when to keep possession, when to pass, and to be tough defensively. The Premier League demands a higher level due to its pace, and for a teenager, that’s a big challenge. Not everyone can navigate that hurdle. Mistakes are part of the learning curve."
Alonso typically employs a 3-4-2-1 formation, with players like Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers filling the No 10 roles. He’s considering whether Estêvão could fit into a central position depending on the match dynamics. "He could play in that pocket as a No 10, but he’s more accustomed to playing as a winger in the Premier League," he noted, acknowledging Estêvão’s strengths in one-on-one situations.
Chelsea faces defensive challenges ahead of their clash with Manchester United, with Jorrel Hato nursing a back issue and Maxence Lacroix out due to a hamstring injury sustained against Liverpool.
