Carrick Confident in Fernandes as Captain: 'We Move Forward'
Michael Carrick is all in for Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United's captain, declaring he’s ready to "move forward" with the midfielder at the helm.
After benching Fernandes during the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, Carrick faced questions about the decision, especially following the captain's critical remarks about his tactics in a previous Champions League match. However, Carrick insists the choice was purely tactical and he stands by it as the team gears up for Saturday’s clash with Chelsea.
"It was a decision for the game. That's it," Carrick stated, emphasizing that Fernandes is completely dedicated to the club. "I have no issues with that; we move forward. We're looking forward to the game now."
When asked about Fernandes continuing as captain after Harry Maguire donned the armband last weekend, Carrick made it clear: "There's no decision to be made on that."
He firmly backed Fernandes against suggestions that his emotions might hinder his leadership, saying, "He's the captain of our football club. Different personalities lead in different ways, and it ultimately comes down to what happens on the pitch."
Carrick's own future has come under scrutiny following the disappointing start to the Premier League season, but he remains steadfast in his role. Despite the ongoing discussions among the club's executives about the way forward, Carrick confirmed he will continue to lead the team.
"I don’t need assurances from anyone," he asserted in a press conference. "I understand the responsibility that comes with this job. My primary focus is on preparing for Chelsea, not on outside noise."
He added, "I care about what the supporters think. I focus on what’s happening in the stadium and what we deliver to our fans. I don't pay attention to anything else. I know what this job entails and what we need to improve."
When asked if he was surprised to still be in his position, Carrick responded, "No. I'm here to do my job and make things better. I’m not surprised, no."
Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol noted Carrick’s composure during this turbulent time, remarking on his ability to convey unity within the club. Carrick’s message is clear: this is about the team and the club, not about him.
