Carrick Stands Firm on Martínez as United Gear Up for Roma Clash
Michael Carrick is backing Lisandro Martínez to maintain his place in the squad, undeterred by the defender’s recent frustrations with Manchester United’s management and his subsequent red card against Chelsea. Martínez, who faced disciplinary action for his remarks aimed at director of football Jason Wilcox, is set to feature in the crucial Champions League match against Roma as United looks to snap a staggering nine-game winless streak.
"I have no concerns about his commitment," Carrick stated regarding the Argentine World Cup winner. "Football is unpredictable and mistakes happen, but his dedication isn’t in question."
After disappointing away losses to Atlético Madrid and Como, United finds itself languishing at the bottom of their Champions League group. Carrick knows the pressure is mounting, with the need for positive results against Roma and Aston Villa this week becoming increasingly urgent to secure his position as manager.
"I can’t predict the future or what lies ahead," Carrick remarked. "What matters is our preparation for tomorrow's game, and honestly, I’m excited about it. Given our current situation, it may sound crazy, but my focus is solely on this match. Whatever happens after, happens."
United's last home outing ended in a disheartening 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, leaving players to face the wrath of the Stretford End. Young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo acknowledged the fans' frustration, stating, "In these tough times, it’s unrealistic to expect the supporters to be fully behind us when we aren’t delivering results. We owe it to them to turn things around."
In terms of squad news, Carrick will miss the services of key players like Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, and Benjamin Sesko against Roma. Although Patrick Dorgu has resumed training, he won't be available for this critical fixture.
