Celtic and Rangers Face Closed Doors in Scottish Cup Showdown
In a disappointing turn of events for fans, Celtic and Rangers will play their next home fixtures in the Scottish Cup without any supporters in attendance. This decision follows the failure of both clubs to overturn a recent sanction imposed by the Scottish FA, which was upheld after their appeal was dismissed. The Glasgow rivals presented their arguments in front of a Scottish FA appellate tribunal on Monday, but the ruling meant they couldn't escape the consequences of crowd trouble. Each club will also have to pay a £100,000 fine to the visiting team during their respective home games in this prestigious competition. Interestingly, the tribunal did decide to set aside a suspended ban on fans for any future incidents, which offers a glimmer of hope for supporters moving forward. Celtic has voiced strong objections to what they describe as an “excessive and disproportionate punishment,” arguing that their fans' actions during a moment of celebration are being unfairly compared to the behavior of Rangers supporters. The club further contended that they shouldn’t be held responsible for safety measures at Ibrox, insisting that they shouldn't face the same penalties as their city rivals. The stadium closure penalty was initially announced in August, following chaotic scenes at the end of last season's quarter-final clash at Ibrox, where Celtic triumphed in a penalty shootout. That night, the atmosphere turned tumultuous with fireworks and projectiles being thrown, leading to injuries among police officers and 43 arrests by late August. An independent report released in July highlighted that the incident was perilously close to escalating into a violent confrontation. Conducted by Mark Blackbourne, the review pointed fingers at both clubs for their shortcomings and criticized the SFA for not adopting a firmer stance on crowd control. Following the unrest, an agreement was reached in September to bar away fans from all Old Firm derbies in this season's SPFL fixtures.
