Community Spirit Shines as Penicuik Prepares for Clyde Clash
On a bright April day in 2020, Montgomery Park in Penicuik is buzzing with anticipation as the community bands together to prepare for the Scottish Cup showdown against Clyde.
Club president Andy Penman revealed that around 30 volunteers came out on Monday evening to tackle the aftermath of Storm Boelo, which had left the pitch littered with debris.
Originally set for Friday under the watchful eye of BBC cameras, the match was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. The storm’s fierce winds only added to the challenges, scattering branches across a significant portion of the field.
"We've had branches coming down and actually going into the surface vertically," Penman noted, highlighting the struggle to get the ground ready for play.
Despite the chaos above ground, he assured fans that the pitch itself is in great condition, as the rain from the previous days has quickly drained away.
Currently, Penicuik sits ninth in the East of Scotland Football League Premier Division, while their opponents Clyde are vying for the top spot in League Two, sharing points with Stranraer.
However, Penicuik can draw confidence from their impressive 3-0 victory over Stenhousemuir at the same stage in 2019. They previously secured their spot in this round by defeating Kilwinning Rangers, and now face a tough challenge against East Kilbride, who are fourth in League One.
For Penman, this match is more than just a game; it's their "cup final." With 1,300 tickets already sold for the 19:45 GMT kick-off, excitement is in the air.
"We've been up and down in the league, probably distracted by the cup run. Now the players are just looking forward to the challenge," he added, capturing the spirit of determination that surrounds the team.
