Dewsbury-Hall Bounces Back with Brilliant Performance as Everton Triumph
6 November 2026
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall arrived at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Friday night with a chip on his shoulder, and he certainly let his performance do the talking.
Just hours before the match, the Everton midfielder faced a bitter disappointment as England manager Thomas Tuchel chose to overlook him for this month's Nations League fixtures. Dewsbury-Hall had been a standout performer in recent weeks, but in a surprising twist, it was Borussia Dortmund's Jobe Bellingham who got the nod instead.
However, by the end of the evening, Dewsbury-Hall had plenty to celebrate. His thunderous goal played a crucial role in Everton's comeback, sealing a 3-1 victory over Coventry City and propelling the team to fifth place in the Premier League.
"It was a disappointing morning, I won't lie. Playing for my country is a massive dream of mine, and I felt I was close," Dewsbury-Hall shared with Sky Sports after the match. "Yes, I'm sad, but I'm proud of how I reacted. All I can do is keep performing well and hope for that call-up one day. I'm not giving up."
The wait until the next international break in March will likely feel like a long one for Dewsbury-Hall. But this midfielder is no stranger to challenges and setbacks throughout his journey in football.
He made his Premier League debut with his boyhood club Leicester City at the age of 22, after spending seasons gaining experience on loan at clubs like Luton Town and Blackpool. His first team chance coincided with a turbulent period for Leicester, which culminated in relegation the following season.
After a stellar season helping Leicester clinch the Championship title under Enzo Maresca, Dewsbury-Hall made a high-profile move to Chelsea for £30 million. Unfortunately, he struggled to find regular playing time in his only season there, primarily featuring in cup competitions.
It was his transfer to Everton last summer that finally brought him the environment he needed to thrive. At 26, he began to showcase the talents that once made him a highly sought-after attacking midfielder, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists in the Premier League since last season.
"I'm really enjoying it here," he said. "The gaffer gives me the freedom to pop up all over the pitch, and it feels great."
Tuchel acknowledged that Dewsbury-Hall was "very close" to making the England squad, praising his "very good season" with Everton so far. "I've got the right mentality," Dewsbury-Hall added. "I’ll keep pushing myself and see where it leads."
It wasn't just Dewsbury-Hall who made headlines against Coventry. Thierno Barry shone brightly, scoring twice within five minutes early in the second half, helping Everton turn the game around. With 10 goals this season across all competitions, Barry has already surpassed his tally from last year.
Only Erling Haaland, with 14 goals, has found the net more often than Barry this season for David Moyes' side. The French forward not only dazzles with his scoring but also with his exuberant goal celebrations.
"I saw a dance on TikTok and decided to give it a go after scoring," Barry explained. "I think Tyrique was too shy to join in, so I had to do it solo!"
Barry is also inspired by Haaland, aiming to keep up his impressive form. "I'm a fan of his and watch a lot of his videos. If I can keep scoring and challenge for the Golden Boot, I'll do my best!"
Earlier that night, David Moyes equaled Harry Catterick's record for most matches managed as Everton's boss, both having led the team in 592 games.
"I'm proud of this milestone," Moyes said in the match program. "Managing Everton means a lot to me and my family. I always strive to do what's best for the club."
With more exciting football to come, Everton fans have much to look forward to.
