Emmanuel Latte Lath: From MLS Struggles to Bundesliga Breakthrough
Emmanuel Latte Lath recently made waves with his Bundesliga debut for Union Berlin, scoring just three minutes into the game. At 27, it marked his first foray into a major European league, and the thrill of that moment was explosive for him.
That header against Eintracht Frankfurt represented more than just a goal; it was a significant milestone in a journey that began in Côte d'Ivoire before moving to Italy at eight. After a career that had hit a snag, it was a powerful reminder of why he loves the game.
Last year, Latte Lath made a high-profile move from Middlesbrough to Atlanta in Major League Soccer for £22.5 million, a transition that came with immense expectations. Reflecting on the pressure, he told Sky Sports, "It was difficult because I came there with a lot of expectation."
His time at Atlanta was challenging. Despite scoring 11 goals in 48 appearances, he felt he could have done much more. "I really wanted to show them why I arrived there. And it did not work," he confessed, clearly wishing for a different outcome.
One of his fondest memories is facing off against Lionel Messi. "I felt like a kid seeing my hero. It was unbelievable. I even got to touch him!" he said with a chuckle, cherishing that unforgettable experience.
When reflecting on his journey, Latte Lath acknowledges moments of regret. "You must remember why you started. The people around you can greatly influence your choices and career path," he noted, hinting at the weight of external expectations.
If he could speak to his younger self, he would advise, "Take more decisions for yourself. Don't let others dictate your path."
Starting his career at Atalanta, he had a series of loans, with a standout season at St Gallen, where he netted 14 goals. Yet, it was at Middlesbrough where he truly shone, scoring 16 goals in his first Championship season and establishing himself.
What made Boro special for him? "It’s a family club. I left my family in Italy, and I found another family there. That support was crucial for me, helping me to excel."
Michael Carrick was the man overseeing Latte Lath's impressive run at Boro. "He’s a calm coach who observes everything. He knows how to get the best out of players," he explained.
As Carrick faces challenges at Manchester United, Latte Lath believes his former boss will handle it well. "In tough times, he never panicked. He’d analyze the situation and help us talk through it. He understood how to communicate effectively with us."
Latte Lath has also embraced personal growth, working with a mental coach. Initially skeptical, he found the experience transformative. "It’s not just about tactics; it’s about understanding myself and growing as a person, especially since I’ve become a father. It’s been very helpful."
Now in the Bundesliga, things are different. "New coach, new system, new everything. It's intense and demanding. After that debut goal, the real tests began for Union."
He’s already faced heavyweights like Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. On playing against stars like Harry Kane, he said, "Losing isn’t fun, but each match is a lesson. I look to learn from top players, stealing movements and strategies as I aim to lead as a striker."
Reflecting on the past year, he admits it’s been challenging but insists he’s learned to persevere. "You can’t do it alone; the people around me have been vital in my journey." His path continues, filled with determination and self-discovery.
