FIFA to Open Doors on Infantino's Controversial World Cup Plans
Gianni Infantino has been leading FIFA since 2016, and his recent attempts to privatize parts of the World Cup have sparked significant controversy.
FIFA has announced that it will grant access to “key documents” related to Infantino's controversial plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. This move comes in response to UEFA’s ultimatum, which demands clarity on the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal by November 2.
After a recent council meeting, where Infantino expressed regret over the failed initiative, he left many questions unanswered and requested that inquiries be submitted in writing.
As the deadline approaches, FIFA's secretary general, Mattias Grafstrom, informed council members that they could view these documents—but only in person at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich. According to Grafstrom’s letter, which was obtained by BBC Sport, access will be granted under strict confidentiality protocols, and members are encouraged to register for viewings within the next two weeks.
The specifics of which documents will be accessible remain unclear. Sources indicate that FIFA considers UEFA's two-week deadline unrealistic, especially with their focus on organizing a new youth World Cup in Azerbaijan and preparing for an extraordinary congress later this month.
Further complicating matters, UEFA has initiated legal action in the U.S., seeking the release of evidence and documentation related to the FFE. This legal scrutiny may limit FIFA's ability to respond comprehensively to UEFA's requests.
Last month, UEFA emphasized that FIFA had not adequately addressed numerous crucial questions. Their correspondence included eight pages of inquiries, covering topics from funding structures to the awarding of the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to Donald Trump, and even the controversial suspended ban on U.S. striker Folarin Balogun during the World Cup.
The letter pointed out that while FIFA acknowledged mistakes and hinted at potential governance reforms, these do not clarify how decisions were made or why the FIFA Council wasn’t involved earlier in the process. UEFA’s strong message was clear: these questions demand immediate answers, not deferral to future meetings.
While UEFA has not specified potential consequences if FIFA fails to meet the deadline, the pressure on Infantino is mounting ahead of the November 18 deadline for candidates to declare their intentions for next year’s presidential election.
In his response, Grafstrom noted that UEFA’s request included far more questions than FIFA anticipated and assured that a response is being prepared for council members. He also stated that the FFE proposal required council and member association approval, implying there would be no penalty for FIFA's withdrawal from the initiative.
UEFA has been contacted for further comments as the situation continues to evolve.
