FIFA's Ambition for Women's World Cup Prize Money Falls Short
FIFA is gearing up for the Women's World Cup in Brazil next summer, but it seems they won’t quite hit the mark on gender equality in prize money. Despite raking in a staggering $15 billion from this summer’s men's tournament, the gap in earnings for female athletes will remain wide.
In 2023, FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed a vision for equality, stating that the organization's goal was to achieve balance in prize funds by 2027. He confidently assured that FIFA was taking action, not just paying lip service. This had sparked optimism among fans and players alike, who anticipated that the prize money in 2027 would at least be equal on a per-team basis.
With 48 teams competing in the men's event versus 32 in the women's tournament, a prize fund for women that was two-thirds of the men's $655 million would be considered a fair compromise. However, reports indicate that the women’s prize pool will only be about a third of that amount.
While this represents a significant increase, the news has left some feeling disappointed. One prominent female figure described it as a “huge missed open goal” for FIFA. A final decision on the prize money is expected to be announced at FIFA’s council meeting in December.
According to Sky News, the women’s prize fund is expected to double from $110 million in 2023 to around $220 million, marking a seven-fold increase from the 2019 Women’s World Cup. In contrast, the men’s tournament this year awarded $50 million to the winners, Spain.
FIFA has reportedly engaged in discussions with several top female players to outline their broader investments in women’s football and clarify the reasoning behind the prize money decision. This is thought to be linked to anticipated commercial revenues from the 2027 tournament.
Infantino has previously criticized broadcasters for undervaluing the women's game, despite the 2023 tournament attracting 933 million viewers on traditional television and 895 million via streaming. The final, featuring England and Spain in Sydney, drew a global live audience of 67 million and reached 222 million viewers overall, according to FIFA.
While FIFA declined to comment directly, insiders have indicated that enhancements to the women’s club benefits program and additional funds for tournament participants are in the works.
It was also confirmed that teams competing in the 2027 Women's World Cup will receive the same preparation funds as their male counterparts, with amounts more than doubled to $2.5 million each. Furthermore, every player will be assured of business class or chartered flights and private hotel accommodations, aligning their treatment with that of the men’s teams.
