Fleetwood's Conor Haughey: The Teen Who Shocked Arsenal and Stole the Show
It was a night to remember for Fleetwood Town defender Conor Haughey, who scored the decisive penalty in a thrilling shootout against Premier League giants Arsenal. The young star's powerful fifth spot-kick rocketed into the top corner, leading to a pitch invasion at Highbury Stadium and sealing a 5-3 victory for his team in the Carabao Cup. After the match, Haughey's phone exploded with messages from friends and family back in Belfast, overwhelmed by notifications as they congratulated him on the monumental achievement. His emotional post-match interview quickly went viral, capturing the raw joy of the moment. "There were too many emotions going on, it was just wild," Haughey shared with BBC Sport NI's Thomas Kane. "I'm from the New Lodge, I've been brought up like that, and it just came out." Reflecting on the surreal experience, he added, "I woke up this morning thinking, ‘This actually is real.’ It’s unbelievable. We had a game plan and executed it perfectly, so onto the next round." As the youngest player in Glentoran history, Haughey made his debut at just 15 before joining Fleetwood in 2023. During the match, he volunteered to take the crucial penalty after Viktor Gyokeres equalized for Arsenal. On a night where Northern Ireland senior boss Michael O'Neill was present to watch rising talent Ceadach O'Neill, it was Haughey who stole the spotlight. After Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved a weak effort from Bruno Guimaraes, Haughey stepped up to take the fifth penalty, sealing the stunning win for his side. "I knew I could hit one, and luckily I went fifth," he explained. "Lynchy took all the pressure off me with the save. When I put the ball down, I knew where I was going and just stuck it there. I ran straight over to my mates in the corner, and we celebrated like crazy." Despite Fleetwood being 84 places below Arsenal in the football hierarchy, Haughey is still finding it hard to believe what just happened. "It hasn’t really sunk in yet. I’m playing FIFA, and some Arsenal players are in my team. It feels crazy, like it’s just a normal day." He acknowledged the victory’s significance, stating, "It’s history for the fans, and it’s massive for us too, beating the champions. They must feel the same buzz I had when I scored. It was just fantastic." As he anticipates the quarter-final draw, Haughey admits he’s feeling a bit anxious. When asked who he would like to face next at Highbury, he didn’t hesitate: "Man City. Simple as that."
