James McClean Parts Ways with Derry City After Contract Resolution
James McClean and Derry City have officially parted ways after a mutual agreement to end his contract. The former Republic of Ireland international says that the club will always hold a cherished spot in his heart.
McClean made his return to his hometown club from Wrexham in January, but he hasn’t been in a matchday squad since July. Just earlier this month, the 37-year-old called an attempt to terminate his contract “incomprehensible.”
However, in a collaborative statement released on Wednesday, both McClean and the club expressed satisfaction with their resolution, indicating a desire to move forward positively.
“I’m glad we’ve been able to find a resolution to this situation,” McClean stated. “Although my time at the club didn’t pan out as I envisioned, Derry City will always be special to me. I’m grateful for the fans’ support and wish the team, management, and staff the very best moving forward.”
He also extended his best wishes to the squad as they prepare for the FAI Cup final against Waterford on November 8.
Derry City chairman Philip O'Doherty expressed gratitude for McClean’s commitment to the club. “His contributions go well beyond the Brandywell; earning 103 senior caps for the Republic of Ireland is a remarkable achievement. We want to formally recognize his significant impact on Irish football as a whole,” O'Doherty added.
