Jon Martin: Why Staying Home at Real Sociedad Feels Right
Jon Martin is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after young defenders in Europe. As he gears up for the Basque derby against Athletic Club, he reflects on his deep-rooted connection to Real Sociedad and why he’s not ready to leave just yet. "This is my home," Martin declares confidently when discussing his life at La Real. Despite being linked to powerhouses like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and top Premier League clubs, he’s firmly planted in San Sebastián. Having joined the club at just 12 years old, he feels a genuine sense of belonging. "The desire to stay here comes from within," the 20-year-old centre-back explains. "This is where I want to be." The buzz around him is palpable, and he acknowledges it humbly. "I think people appreciate my style," he says. But it’s not just speculation; his impressive performances have put him firmly on the radar of major clubs across Europe. In July, Martin committed his future to Real Sociedad with a long-term contract running until 2032. Known for his ball-playing abilities and passing range, he made his debut for Spain this summer and is seen as a potential long-term partner for Pau Cubarsi in the national defense — a thrilling prospect for fans. Physically, he presents a challenge for opponents, boasting solid defensive metrics that stand out in LaLiga, especially for someone his age. He played a crucial role when Real Sociedad lifted the Copa del Rey under coach Pellegrino Matarazzo last April. Matarazzo’s influence has been significant for Martin. The American coach’s positive playing style has been pivotal in shaping his development. "I’m really happy working with this coach," he shares. "He knows we’re a brave team that enjoys taking risks. He’s very approachable, and for young players like me, that trust is invaluable." That trust will be essential as they head into the intense atmosphere of San Mames. For Martin, these derbies hit differently. "As a homegrown player, you feel it more. These matches are special," he says, reflecting on his experience in previous encounters. In fact, five of his first 27 starts came in this very derby, and he urges fans to witness the electric atmosphere. "The rivalry is filled with passion. We are all pumped for it and focused on winning." Family ties also play an important role in Martin's journey. His father, a former Real Sociedad player whose career was cut short by injury, has been a guiding presence. "He’s my rock, and he knows what it’s like to be in these situations. Before matches, I always talk to him for advice. He helps me stay calm." As he prepares for the big clash, Martin is looking forward to another opportunity to cement his growing reputation. With Real Sociedad also eyeing success in the Spanish Super Cup and the Europa League this season, he feels right at home. "Everything I need to perform at a high level is here," he says. With the derby on the horizon, his focus remains clear. "I have to concentrate on that and give my best performance."
