Match Mayhem: Paulsgrove Walks Off in 8-0 Defeat
In a stunning twist of non-league football, Andover Town found themselves on the verge of an incredible victory, leading Paulsgrove 8-0 before the match was abruptly abandoned. The game, held in Hampshire Premier League Division One, turned chaotic when Paulsgrove, having already been down 7-0 at halftime, saw their squad dwindle to just six players.
Andover's manager, Robbie Skeates, described the situation as a 'complete farce.' He noted that four Paulsgrove players failed to re-emerge after the break, and another exited due to injury shortly after Andover scored their eighth goal. According to football regulations, a match cannot proceed if a team has fewer than seven players on the field.
The Hampshire Premier Football League is now investigating the incident, while Paulsgrove's social media suggested that injuries were the cause of their players' sudden exit. Skeates, however, was baffled by the events. He remarked, "I’ve been involved in football a long time and I’ve genuinely never seen anything like what happened today from an opposition side. All 11 of their players walked off perfectly fine at half-time with us 7-0 up. They eventually came back out with seven, so apparently four must have managed to get injured in the changing room."
After Andover scored quickly to make it 8-0, Skeates felt the match had devolved into absurdity. "From there it became a complete farce," he added. The league has yet to provide a statement on the matter, focusing on the investigation.
Andover Town, currently mid-table in the 16-team league, has shown solid form this season. In contrast, Paulsgrove finds themselves at the bottom of the standings, having suffered ten consecutive losses, including three matches where they conceded eight goals or more. Skeates confirmed that Andover would be filing an official report regarding the incident.
