Players Unite: Socceroos and Matildas Take Legal Action Against Football Australia
In a bold move, the Socceroos and Matildas have filed a lawsuit against Football Australia, igniting a multi-million dollar conflict between the players and the governing body.
The Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) is spearheading this legal action, seeking a substantial seven-figure sum for the players.
At the heart of the dispute is the belief that the revenue-sharing agreement between the players and Football Australia is not being honored adequately.
Football Australia has acknowledged the PFA’s legal action in the NSW Supreme Court, clarifying that the case involves a third party linked to a separate issue currently under review by the National Dispute Resolution Chamber (NDRC).
An FA spokesperson explained, "The Supreme Court’s role is limited to the subpoena process, which concludes once that is complete." The spokesperson also noted that due to confidentiality obligations surrounding the NDRC matter, they would refrain from further comments.
Meanwhile, the PFA has chosen to remain tight-lipped about the specifics.
The crux of the matter revolves around FA’s commercial agreements and whether the players are receiving their fair slice of the pie.
Under the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) established in 2023, players from both national teams are entitled to a share of FA’s national team earnings.
However, registration fees or sponsorships associated with junior programs are off-limits for the senior national team players.
Revenue from ticket sales, broadcasting, and sponsorships connected to the Socceroos and Matildas does flow back to the players, who are supposed to receive 18 to 20% of these commercial deals.
Despite this framework, players feel they aren't being compensated fairly, prompting the PFA to initiate legal proceedings in the NSW Supreme Court.
This legal dispute is just the latest in a series of high-profile challenges faced by Football Australia, which recently settled out of court with Macarthur FC regarding misleading claims before its A-League debut in 2020.
Additionally, the governing body resolved an unfair dismissal case with former chief football officer Ernie Merrick.
As the Socceroos gear up for matches in the Middle East during the upcoming November window, tensions are expected to rise further due to the ongoing regional conflict.
Coach Tony Popovic is set to announce his squad this week for the trip to Doha, where they will meet Qatar, followed by a clash with Jordan in Amman, all while security concerns loom large.
The Matildas are also preparing for a two-match friendly series against Colombia in Canberra and Geelong later this month.
Frustration is mounting between the players and Football Australia as the current CBA approaches its expiration in September next year. Talks over new terms have not yet begun, following a deadlock earlier this year between the PFA and A-Leagues over player salaries.
