Pressure Makes Perfect: Everton's Thierno Barry Steps Up
The Premier League kicks off at 8pm GMT with Everton facing Newcastle, and both sides have plenty to prove.
Players thrive on different motivations. While some excel under pressure, needing that extra push to perform, others prefer a stable environment to bring out their best. Thierno Barry seems to fit the first mold, having faced challenges adapting to the Premier League after his move from Villarreal.
Initially, Barry struggled to find his footing, with a disappointing tally of just eight goals over 21 league starts, often finding himself substituted or starting on the bench. Everton's interest in signing Folarin Balogun from Monaco reflected their desire to bolster their attacking options, but when that deal fell through on deadline day, Barry unexpectedly became the focal point of the team.
With Beto's departure, Barry transitioned from a backup option to the main striker. This shift has worked wonders for him; free from the anxiety of competition and injury, he has transformed into a player on fire. Scoring on the opening weekend and netting again last Thursday in a League Cup victory over Newcastle, Barry has tallied seven goals in just 11 appearances and is eager to increase that number tonight.
On the other side, Newcastle aims to avoid a third Monday night defeat this season, having suffered heavy losses to Leeds and Coventry. Under Matthias Jaissle, they've shown glimpses of potential, but inconsistency and a lack of physicality have plagued their performances.
A recent win against Crystal Palace provided some relief, and with Will Osula scoring in his start, they seemed to have a striker ready to shine—until his latest injury setback. Now, Newcastle faces a troubling reality: with only two clubs creating fewer big chances than their 14, and Jaissle hesitant to fully utilize his summer signings, the attack remains a concern.
As both teams sit close on the league table—12th versus 14th—tonight's clash may not deliver a barrage of goals or dazzling football. However, in the world of English football, we can always count on intensity, aggression, and a fair share of drama, so expect plenty of action on the pitch.
