Rangers' Strikers Shine in Dominant 4-0 Win Over St Johnstone
Rangers responded to last weekend's disappointment with an explosive 4-0 victory over St Johnstone. Derek McInnes called for a strong reaction, and his players answered emphatically, delivering a performance that left no doubt about their intentions.
After a shaky start to the second half, when St Johnstone seemed poised to make a comeback, Rangers regained control and never looked back. The scoreline was a clear reflection of their dominance on the pitch.
"Rangers were excellent for a number of reasons," remarked former midfielder Andy Halliday on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound. "They created plenty of opportunities and could have easily led 4-0 at halftime. It's a relief to come away unscathed and see our strikers finding their scoring touch again."
The decision to bench Djeidi Gassama in favor of two strikers paid off, as Kelsy and Naderi linked up beautifully. Kelsy opened the scoring and added another later, while Naderi contributed with a goal and an assist, proving their worth in the absence of key players like Lawrence Shankland and Youssef Chermiti.
"When strikers are scoring, it changes everything about your approach to the game," noted ex-Rangers forward Peter Lovenkrands. "It boosts confidence across the board, and this performance will significantly enhance Kelsy's self-belief."
Rangers' statistics tell the tale of their superiority. They recorded an expected goals tally of 4.57 compared to St Johnstone's 0.58, with 21 shots, nine of which were on target. Their ability to create eight significant chances highlighted their attacking prowess, while St Johnstone managed just two.
The team capitalized on set pieces, finally scoring from a corner when Kelsy tapped in a flick-on from Emmanuel Fernandez. This was an encouraging sign, as set pieces had been a weakness for Rangers this season.
"Last season, set pieces were one of our strengths," Halliday pointed out. "The delivery has often been poor this year, but finally scoring from a corner today adds another weapon to our arsenal. They need to be a real threat from set pieces again."
McInnes was pleased with the performance, calling it one of their best in recent times. With Hearts up next, he reflected on the challenge that awaits him at Tynecastle, where he has fond memories.
"I had a fantastic time at Hearts, and I know how tough it is to play there," McInnes said. "We were unbeaten against them last season, and they have a solid home record. We need to bring our A-game to get a result. It's reassuring to see our strikers scoring; it gives us confidence heading into every match. We know it will be challenging, but we aim to make it difficult for them too."
