Seamus Coleman Contemplates Retirement After Long Career at Everton
Seamus Coleman is at a crossroads in his football journey, pondering the possibility of retirement. The 38-year-old hasn’t stepped onto the pitch since representing the Republic of Ireland in a friendly against Canada back in June. Having spent 17 years at Everton, Coleman is currently without a club after leaving the Toffees at the end of last season. There were whispers linking him to Sheffield United over the summer, but he's been keeping fit independently, without any competitive matches since June. Recently left out of the Republic of Ireland squad for a series of Nations League matches, Ireland's head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson mentioned that Coleman still aims to play and is hopeful of including him in future selections. However, during a chat on The Overlap Fan Debate with Jamie Carragher, Coleman admitted he’s mulling over retirement, though he hasn’t made any final decisions yet. "I have been keeping fit but it is edging towards that way, and happily as well," he shared, reflecting on his impressive record of 374 Premier League appearances for Everton. Coleman is currently training with his local Gaelic football team, Killybegs, back in Donegal. He mentioned the challenge of not being part of a club setup. "It’s hard for many reasons. Mentally and physically, just to keep ticking over. I enjoy training, but it’s different when you’re not with a ball." As for what lies ahead, Coleman has been cherishing family moments and is content with his current situation. He had aspirations of adding to his 81 international caps and hoped to play until Euro 2028, where Ireland will co-host the tournament. Despite turning down a coaching role at Everton to pursue playing opportunities, Coleman is finding solace in spending quality time with family, especially during the Halloween break. "The longer I’ve been off, the more content I am with what I am doing at the minute," he reflected. The future remains uncertain for the veteran defender, but he’s taking it one day at a time.
