Sheffield Wednesday Turns to Dave Challinor as New Manager
Sheffield Wednesday has made a significant move by appointing Dave Challinor as their new manager. This decision follows the dismissal of Henrik Pedersen, who was let go after the team managed just one win in their last six League One outings.
The Owls find themselves in a bit of a slump, having gone three matches without a win, with one draw and two losses. Currently, they sit ninth in the league table and are looking to turn their fortunes around.
Challinor, who previously collaborated with Wednesday's sporting director Simon Wilson at Stockport County, will be observing from the stands during their next match against Blackpool on Sunday at 14:00 GMT, as interim boss Matt Hamshaw continues to lead the team.
A former defender for clubs like Bury and Tranmere Rovers, Challinor began his managerial journey at Colwyn Bay in 2010. The 51-year-old has since celebrated a series of promotions with AFC Fylde and Hartlepool.
Most notably, he took Stockport County from the National League to the League Two title in just three seasons, and also led them to the League One play-offs on two occasions. His tenure with the Hatters ended after mutual consent following a playoff final loss to Bolton Wanderers in the 2025-26 season.
According to BBC Radio Sheffield's Rob Staton, the club's new ownership sought a proven winner to transform recent draws and losses into victories. With seven promotions under his belt, Challinor's experience in League One is expected to be invaluable.
His mission will be to forge a cohesive unit from a squad overflowing with talent, shifting the focus onto effective team play. The competition in the top seven of League One is heating up, with Wednesday aiming to join the ranks of Leicester and the rising MK Dons.
This role presents a fresh challenge for Challinor, differing greatly from his previous positions at Stockport, Hartlepool, or Fylde, where expectations were markedly different. In League One, the pressure is on; fans anticipate victories, and the bar is set high.
Challinor is likely to bring Clint Hill and Anthony Sweeney onto his coaching staff, bolstered by the strong working relationship he has with Simon Wilson from their time together at Stockport. This collaboration will be crucial as he seeks to navigate the challenges ahead.
