Spurs Shock Chelsea with Stunning Win as Palmer Sees Red
Roberto De Zerbi was a bundle of nerves on the touchline, his frustration palpable as he led Tottenham against Chelsea. After 90 minutes of tense back-and-forth, he could finally breathe a sigh of relief, celebrating Spurs’ first victory at Stamford Bridge since 2018. The match itself wasn’t one for the highlight reels. In fact, it was a rather chaotic affair, with the opening goal coming from an own goal by Mike Penders. The young Belgian keeper, filling in for the injured Emi Martínez, misjudged a corner from the impressive Mateus Fernandes, inadvertently punching the ball into his own net. Xabi Alonso, Chelsea's manager, could argue that luck wasn’t on his side, but the reality was that this was one of the poorest performances from his side since he took over. Chelsea struggled at both ends of the pitch; Penders’ blunder was just the beginning, and they missed the presence of João Pedro up front. Many were left wondering why Alonso opted not to start Danny Welbeck. Chelsea were clearly rattled, especially after Cole Palmer received a red card shortly after the own goal. This was a huge blow, and soon after, Mathys Tel doubled Spurs' lead, sealing back-to-back wins for Tottenham and lifting them to 12th place in the standings. Spurs knew they had to stifle Chelsea’s fast starts under Alonso, and without Pedro, the Blues were forced to alter their strategy. This led to a sluggish opening phase, where both sides struggled to find their rhythm. The closest either came to scoring early was when a mistake from Fernandes allowed Antonin Kinsky to deny Palmer. Chelsea’s 4-2-4 formation didn’t seem to work as planned. With Palmer and Morgan Rogers as false nines, the team lacked a focal point, leaving Pedro Neto isolated on the right flank and Geovany Quenda hesitant on the left. Tottenham’s midfield trio of Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and James Maddison began to dominate. However, they lacked the finishing touch, with Kudus and Tonali sending shots off-target. Tel also squandered chances, and Omar Marmoush couldn't capitalize on a prime opportunity, shooting too close to Penders from a cutback. Marmoush, starting in place of Dominic Solanke, buzzed around but found it tough against Chelsea’s defense. On the other end, Kinsky did well to save a shot from Henderson after a defensive error, but Chelsea failed to create significant chances before halftime. This win marked just Spurs' second away victory against Chelsea in 35 attempts in the Premier League, with their last triumph occurring in April 2018. They also became the first team to keep a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea since December 1986. Penders, now the second-youngest goalkeeper to score an own goal in the Premier League, found himself at the center of attention alongside Palmer, whose red card marked Chelsea's 100th in the league. Tottenham appeared in control for the most part, but the start of the second half brought a scare. Maddison, who had performed well, was replaced by Conor Gallagher, yet Chelsea made little impact. Fernandes continued to pull the strings for Spurs, outclassing Chelsea's midfield. Chelsea's sporadic attacks included a decent effort from Neto, but the game saw a flurry of substitutions. Spurs brought on Solanke and Pedro Porro, while Estêvão replaced Quenda for Chelsea, injecting some life into their play. Estêvão nearly made an immediate impact, cutting in from the right and firing into the side netting. The match heated up after a skirmish between Palmer and Fernandes, yet the quality of play remained low. It was fitting that the opening goal came in bizarre circumstances. As Chelsea’s set-piece coach directed players to position themselves high, Spurs won a corner in the 77th minute. Fernandes delivered a perfect ball, but Penders miscalculated his punch, sending the ball spiraling into his own net, giving Spurs a shock lead. Before Chelsea could regroup, their hopes were dashed when Palmer, already booked, received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Gallagher. This was Chelsea's first red card of the season, a stark contrast to Alonso's recent comments about maintaining emotional control. With ten men, Chelsea's resolve collapsed, and it was Tel who put the final nail in the coffin. He cut in from the left and unleashed a low shot from 20 yards, securing all three points for Spurs.
