Stormy Skies, Stalwart Defenses: Sunderland and Leeds Share the Spoils
Régis Le Bris usually maintains a calm demeanor, but by the end of the match, even Sunderland's composed manager couldn't hide his frustration. His side, struggling at the bottom of the table, felt they deserved a second Premier League victory this season, but had to settle for just a draw on a day where Storm Boelo wreaked havoc on the game.
For Daniel Farke, this point on the road will be seen as a positive for Leeds, who continue to improve. But for Sunderland, all eyes now turn to their upcoming match against Coventry on Saturday, a critical game in their fight for survival.
The weather was wild, with gusts strong enough to distort corner flags and send debris swirling across the pitch. Yet, amidst the chaos, Brian Brobbey proved unfazed. Returning from a hamstring injury, the Sunderland striker seemed to embrace the physical battle with Jaka Bijol.
Brobbey had a couple of early chances, notably connecting with an Enzo Le Fée cross and forcing James Trafford into a solid save with a deflected shot. He then pressured Bijol into a mistake, nearly reaching a back pass before Trafford calmly intervened, showcasing his composure by making a smart leg save.
Leeds also boasted a potent forward in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who passed a late fitness test after nursing a bruised foot. Initially quieter than Brobbey, he quickly sought to engage with Luke O’Nien, avoiding Nordi Mukiele, O’Nien’s defensive partner, whenever possible.
Despite a few shaky moments, O’Nien stepped up with a crucial tackle on Calvert-Lewin just before the break, preventing a potential goal. The second half, however, started poorly for Sunderland. An attempted clearance saw O’Nien inadvertently catch Mukiele in the throat, leading to an extended stoppage as the former PSG player received treatment.
With Mukiele unable to continue, the erratic Omar Alderete was brought in. At this point, Leeds began to find their rhythm, but Sunderland responded well. Nilson Angulo was lively on the left, forcing Trafford into action with two sharp shots.
After the hour mark, Brobbey made way for the inexperienced Timur Tutyerov just as Farke brought in fresh legs with Noah Okafor and Anton Stach, hoping to exploit the gaps in Sunderland's defense.
The match remained finely balanced. Trafford did well to contain a dangerous corner from Granit Xhaka, while Robin Roefs had to dive at Calvert-Lewin’s feet after mishandling a shot from Ao Tanaka. Calvert-Lewin appealed for a penalty, but referee Stuart Attwell disagreed, and a VAR check upheld his decision.
As the game neared its end, Leeds substitute Sean Longstaff unleashed a low shot from 20 yards, sending a wave of anxiety through the Stadium of Light. However, Roefs responded brilliantly, making a stunning one-handed save to divert the ball around the post.
