Teen Surrenders to Police After Heartless Bradley Lowery Taunt at Match
A 14-year-old Coventry fan has voluntarily approached West Midlands police after a video surfaced on social media, seemingly showing him mocking Sunderland fans with an image of Bradley Lowery during a Premier League match this past Saturday.
Bradley Lowery, who passed away at just six years old in 2017, captured the hearts of football fans everywhere when he bravely battled neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer.
In response to the incident, Coventry City FC announced on Sunday that they are looking into the footage. Bradley’s mother, Gemma Lowery, shared a heartfelt statement via the Bradley Lowery Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting children battling similar illnesses.
West Midlands police have acknowledged the viral video and stated they are conducting a thorough investigation. They confirmed that the boy has come forward and will be interviewed soon. The police also expressed their understanding of the distress this situation has caused within the community and the Lowery family, assuring them they will be kept informed of the investigation's progress.
Coventry City FC also remarked, "We do not tolerate offensive behavior and will work alongside the authorities to determine the right steps forward."
In her poignant message, Gemma Lowery expressed her anguish over the taunt, saying, "My beautiful boy deserves to be remembered with love, not hate." She lamented the use of one of her favorite photos of Bradley, stating, "That smile brings back such precious memories, especially since those moments were so rare.
"Bradley spent so much of his short life fighting cancer and enduring treatments no child should have to face. It truly pains me to see such a beautiful memory twisted into something cruel.
"We are a family that loves football and follows Sunderland wherever they go. I appreciate friendly banter, but mocking a child who died from cancer is beyond unacceptable."
Gemma also urged the club to take appropriate action, emphasizing the need for the young boy's family to help him understand the pain his actions caused. "I don’t want hatred aimed at him; I simply want him to learn from this.
"That photograph represents a little boy who was deeply loved and a family that misses him every single day. Thank you to everyone who has supported Bradley and shown us so much kindness; it means the world to us."
