Tottenham's Martin Ho Calls for Better Support for WSL Referees
Following a controversial penalty that decided the north London derby, Tottenham's manager Martin Ho is calling for greater backing for Women's Super League referees. Arsenal edged past Spurs 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Alessia Russo converting a penalty in the 56th minute that sparked a heated debate. The match's pivotal moment came after Lisa Baum's shot ricocheted off the post, only for Cathinka Tandberg's clearance to strike Ella Morris' arm. Referee Phoebe Cross deemed it a penalty, but Ho disagrees with that interpretation, pointing out that if a teammate's action leads to a handball, it typically warrants an indirect free-kick under the rules. Ho stated, "If your team-mate is just a yard away, time and distance should be considered, and it shouldn’t be a penalty. I raised this in the referees’ meeting at the start of the season, but on the pitch, I didn’t get any answers. It’s frustrating when such decisions impact the game." While acknowledging that refereeing in the WSL is a tough job, Ho believes the quality has slipped compared to last year. Currently, the league lacks both video assistant referees (VAR) and goalline technology, and many officials are not full-time. Reports suggest that full-time referees in the WSL may not arrive until as late as 2029, despite a recent funding increase aimed at improving the situation. Ho suggested that to enhance decision-making, the league needs to invest in more full-time officials and provide them with better training. He pointed out that during crucial matches, having elite referees like Lisa Benn on the sidelines would be more effective in the middle of the action. "When you see the controversy surrounding many calls, it’s clear there’s room for improvement," Ho remarked. "We faced two bookings in the first half, yet we were being held back by Arsenal players without any response from the officials. That’s what frustrates me." The WSL has been contacted for a response to Ho's comments. For now, Tottenham remains one point ahead of Arsenal in the league standings.
