Vincent Kompany Released from Hospital After Health Scare
Vincent Kompany, who took the reins at Bayern Munich in May 2024, is on the mend after being hospitalized following a collapse at the club’s training facility.
The 40-year-old manager fell ill last Friday while observing training for the club's second team, prompting immediate medical attention. Doctors have determined his condition was due to meningeal irritation, an inflammation affecting the protective layers around the brain and spinal cord.
Max Eberl, the club's sporting director, shared an update on Wednesday, stating, "Given the circumstances, he's doing well." He added, "He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us."
While there's no set date for Kompany's return, Bayern indicated it would be a matter of "weeks, not days" before he’s back in action. In the meantime, assistant coach Aaron Danks has stepped up, leading the team to a 3-1 victory against Freiburg last Sunday.
Prior to his collapse, Kompany had been battling a virus, causing him to miss several training sessions. He skipped a pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern's Champions League clash against Arsenal but managed to be present on the touchline for the match.
Eberl elaborated on Kompany's condition, stating, "It's a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication." He also expressed optimism about Kompany's recovery, saying, "I am very confident that he will be back on the touchline, operating at 100% very soon."
As Bayern prepares to face title rivals Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga this Saturday, the team is hopeful for a swift recovery for their head coach.
