Where Does Trent Alexander-Arnold Stand at Real Madrid?
Trent Alexander-Arnold has seen action in just seven of Real Madrid's 13 matches this season, starting four of them and contributing only one assist.
It’s been a rocky beginning for the full-back since he joined Real Madrid in June 2025, aspiring to be the club's go-to right-back. However, the arrival of Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan has complicated things, with manager Jose Mourinho opting to start Fede Valverde—typically a midfielder—in the right-back role.
This shift leaves Alexander-Arnold as the third choice and raises questions about his future role under Mourinho’s tactical plans.
So far this season, Alexander-Arnold has played in seven matches but has started only four, with his single assist coming in a 4-0 victory over Malaga. His playing time has sharply dwindled recently; he missed matches against Roma, Sevilla, and RB Leipzig, and made a mere cameo in the Clasico, entering the pitch during stoppage time.
At 28, Alexander-Arnold’s situation is precarious, especially considering Real Madrid invested 10 million euros to secure him ahead of his free agency after his Liverpool contract expired. Despite having a deal that runs until 2031, doubts about his long-term prospects at the club are surfacing.
When he first arrived, he made an immediate impact, impressing fans by delivering his introductory speech in Spanish and calling his transfer a "dream come true." He expressed his eagerness to showcase his skills and connect with supporters.
The excitement surrounding his signing was palpable, as many viewed him as a key part of the team’s future at right-back, possibly stepping in as Dani Carvajal’s successor. However, his inaugural season fell short of expectations.
In the 2025-26 season, he managed just 21 appearances in La Liga, starting 14 times. A series of injuries hindered his ability to find his rhythm and establish himself as a consistent presence in the squad.
Alexander-Arnold’s struggles are not unique to him; many players have faced challenges during this tumultuous phase for Real Madrid. Injuries have certainly taken their toll, with a hamstring issue in September and a thigh problem in December stunting his progress. Additionally, a muscle injury during pre-season disrupted his preparation for the new campaign.
The managerial upheaval at the club hasn’t helped either. With Xabi Alonso departing and Alvaro Arbeloa stepping in, Alexander-Arnold has had to adjust to a new boss during his debut season, which hasn’t yielded the consistency everyone hoped for.
Now, Mourinho finds himself in the challenging position of balancing a talented squad while making tough choices. He has acknowledged the speculation surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s potential departure in January, admitting that these decisions are difficult but necessary for the team’s overall success.
"It hurts me. I don’t like to make players feel bad," Mourinho stated. "But there are things that are more important than these feelings. I decided that right now, the move was to change up the midfield and put Fede [Valverde] in there."
Despite the tough calls, Mourinho has emphasized the need to keep all players motivated and ready to contribute. He highlighted Alexander-Arnold’s versatility and tactical understanding, noting that squad rotation will be vital for achieving success.
In his debut season, Alexander-Arnold was even deployed in central midfield during a match against Inter Milan, where Mourinho commended his tactical awareness and adaptability alongside Valverde.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher weighed in on Alexander-Arnold's situation, suggesting he would welcome the player back at Anfield. "I think he made a big mistake going to Madrid. We’ve definitely missed his creativity," Carragher remarked, underscoring the defender's position in the current pecking order at Real.
