Sesko Set for Extended Sideline Stint with Shin Injury
Benjamin Sesko's move to Manchester United for £73.7 million was expected to be a game-changer, but now the striker is facing a significant setback. The 23-year-old will be out of action until at least January due to a troubling shin injury.
Sesko hasn't stepped onto the pitch since the Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton on September 16, where he was subbed off in the 66th minute. His recovery has been complicated, requiring multiple tests, with manager Michael Carrick anxious for updates on his return.
Sources indicate that the injury isn't shin splints but rather an impact-related issue, different from what he initially experienced. This ailment has been a recurring problem for Sesko; he missed all of pre-season and struggled with it last year, notably missing the final three Premier League games due to a flare-up against Liverpool in May.
Since his arrival from RB Leipzig in August 2025, Sesko has made 38 appearances for United, scoring 14 goals and providing one assist. Despite his current absence, he was joint-highest goalscorer in the Premier League last season with 11 goals, alongside teammate Bryan Mbeumo.
His absence is a significant blow for Carrick, as Sesko is the team's only traditional number nine. This season, he managed to net two goals—one against Everton in the league and another against Sabah FK in the Champions League. After the latter, he expressed relief at being injury-free, a sentiment that has sadly not lasted.
Now, Sesko will miss crucial league fixtures, including clashes with Liverpool and Arsenal, as well as at least three Champions League matches. This situation raises questions about whether United will look to the January transfer window for a replacement, especially given their struggles in front of goal.
Currently, the team is languishing in 16th place, with only one league win against Ipswich since August 30. They have yet to secure a victory in any competition since September 10, following a disheartening 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League.
After that loss, captain Bruno Fernandes openly criticized Carrick's tactics. Though Fernandes was an unused substitute in the recent 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, the two have reportedly engaged in a clear-the-air discussion.
Despite speculation about Carrick's job security following the Bournemouth loss, he is set to lead the team against Chelsea this Saturday at 12:30 GMT.
